The Record Revived

Exhibition Design / 2025

I researched, modeled, and designed a musuem exhibition set 300 years in the future, imagining that humanity rediscovers the Voyager Golden Record. View the full explainer booklet here.

Closure

I designed the exhibition's form and branding around the Gestalt principle of closure. From an anthropological perspective, closure is not just a design principle; it's human nature to fill in the blanks of our own histories. As guests experience the sounds and sights of the 20th century, each aspect of The Record Revived encourages them to imagine how their present day connects to this distant past.

Color

The exhibition's palette sourced its gold gradient directly from the record cover. Only black and white were added, drawing attention to the slight flashes of gold used in headings and icons.

Typography

I chose a serif for the primary header typeface to add historical depth, and picked one similar to the cover of Murmurs of Earth, the definitive book on the golden record that I sourced much of the exhibit's information from. Afcad gave the exhibition a space-age feel, and I used Helvetica because of its place in NASA's brand guide.

Iconography

I created three icons for context, music, and sounds, all based on the half-circle shape used in the logo.
